Azrael isn't a nice guy, it's safe to say. It's not that he doesn't like people - well, it kind of is, actually - but more along the lines of he hates everything. His siblings, the other angels, are the only ones he will put up with and he can barely tolerate them. Most of them, when he was just a fledgling, looked down on him despite his being an Archangel.
Their reason? He was the angel of death. No one wanted that job, which was why Azrael was created, and throughout the years their disdain caused him to build up shields against them. He became a snarky little piece of.. angel and made sure that he wouldn't be close to anyone.
His older brother, Lucifer, is one of the only angels he will permanently put up with. The Morningstar was his protector, the one who taught him how to defend himself and made sure that their words wouldn't hurt him. Once Luci fell, that was it for Azrael. He almost fell with his brother, but words from him caused the angel of death to stay in Heaven. It's not like anyone else would have taken his job anyway.
Initially, he hated being the angel of death with his entire being. However, throughout the years he has learned to love both the job and the authority he gave him. He isn't one to abuse power, but when it comes to bossing around reapers, he's a bit harsh.
Overall, Azrael is a snarky bastard that won't hesitate in giving back as much as he gets. Hurt his siblings? You'll be dead before you know it. Hurt him? You'll be eradicated.
(Of course, he has his weaknesses. Emotions are a weakness, considering he doesn't believe he can love. His siblings are a weakness. He still holds a slight disdain for his job, the fact that he almost Fell are both weaknesses.
